About Guess the Word

Complete guide, rules, strategies, and frequently asked questions

What Is Wordle?

Wordle is the word-guessing phenomenon that took the world by storm. The challenge is deceptively simple: you have six attempts to guess a secret five-letter word. After each guess, the game provides color-coded feedback — green for letters in the correct position, yellow for letters that are in the word but in the wrong position, and gray for letters not in the word at all. Using these clues, you systematically narrow down the possibilities until you crack the code.

Our version of Wordle offers two exciting modes to keep you engaged. In Daily mode, everyone around the world gets the same puzzle each day, creating a shared experience you can discuss with friends and family. For those who can't get enough, Unlimited mode lets you play as many puzzles as you want, back to back. With a clean, intuitive interface and a satisfying reveal mechanic, every guess is a moment of anticipation.

How to Play Wordle

Wordle is easy to pick up but offers surprising depth for word game enthusiasts. Here's your guide to getting started:

  • Step 1: Choose Your Mode — Select Daily mode for the shared daily puzzle, or Unlimited mode for continuous play.
  • Step 2: Make Your First Guess — Type any valid five-letter word and press Enter. Your opening word is important — choose one with common letters.
  • Step 3: Read the Color Clues — After each guess, each letter tile changes color. Green means the letter is correct and in the right spot. Yellow means the letter is in the word but in the wrong position. Gray means the letter isn't in the word at all.
  • Step 4: Refine Your Guesses — Use the color feedback to inform your next guess. Include green letters in the same position, move yellow letters to new positions, and avoid gray letters entirely.
  • Step 5: Solve in Six or Fewer — You have six total attempts. The fewer guesses you need, the better your performance. Solving in one or two guesses is rare but incredibly satisfying!

Rules of Wordle

Wordle follows a clear and consistent set of rules:

  • The secret word is always exactly five letters long.
  • You have a maximum of six guesses to find the word.
  • Each guess must be a valid English word — random letter combinations are not accepted.
  • After each guess, letters are color-coded: green (correct letter, correct position), yellow (correct letter, wrong position), or gray (letter not in the word).
  • Letters can appear more than once in the secret word. For example, the word "STEER" has two E's.
  • In Daily mode, there is one puzzle per day, and it resets at midnight. In Unlimited mode, you can play continuously.

Tips & Strategies

Improving your Wordle performance involves developing a systematic approach to each puzzle:

  • Choose a strong starter word — The best opening words contain common letters and no repeats. Words like "CRANE," "SLATE," "ADIEU," or "RAISE" test multiple frequent consonants and vowels in a single guess.
  • Use a complementary second word — If your first guess uses SLATE, follow up with something like "CRONY" to test a completely different set of letters. By guess two, you should have tested 10 unique letters.
  • Pay attention to letter frequency — In English, the most common letters are E, T, A, O, I, N, S, H, and R. Prioritize these in your early guesses.
  • Don't forget double letters — Many five-letter words contain repeated letters (CREEK, HAPPY, BLESS). If your clues aren't making sense with unique letters, consider doubles.
  • Use yellow clues strategically — A yellow letter tells you a lot. You know the letter is in the word but NOT in that specific position. Place it somewhere new in your next guess.
  • Eliminate vowels early — English words almost always contain vowels. Identifying which vowels are present (and absent) quickly narrows your options significantly.
  • Think about word patterns — Common English word endings like -TION, -IGHT, -OUND, and -ATCH can help you assemble the answer from partial clues.

History & Origins

Wordle was created by Josh Wardle, a Welsh-born software engineer, as a personal gift for his partner who loved word games. Initially shared only between the two of them, Wardle released the game to the public in October 2021. Its minimalist design — one puzzle per day, no ads, no monetization — stood in stark contrast to the attention-grabbing tactics of most digital games.

Wordle's growth was organic and extraordinary. By January 2022, just three months after its public release, the game had gone from 90 players to millions worldwide. The shared daily puzzle created a communal experience: people compared their results using the now-famous colored grid emoji pattern on social media without spoiling the answer. In January 2022, The New York Times acquired Wordle for a price reportedly in the "low seven figures." The game's success inspired countless variants exploring different word lengths, languages, and themes, cementing Wordle as a cultural phenomenon of the 2020s.

Benefits of Playing Wordle

Wordle offers a unique combination of cognitive benefits wrapped in an engaging daily ritual:

  • Expands vocabulary — Regular play exposes you to a wide range of five-letter words, naturally expanding your English vocabulary and word recognition skills.
  • Develops deductive reasoning — Each guess requires analyzing feedback and logically narrowing down possibilities — pure deductive thinking in action.
  • Improves spelling — Thinking critically about letter placement and word structure reinforces spelling skills and letter pattern awareness.
  • Creates social connection — The shared daily puzzle gives friends, families, and coworkers something fun to discuss and compare, fostering social bonds.
  • Provides a healthy daily habit — Unlike endless-scroll games, Wordle's one-puzzle-per-day format encourages a brief, focused mental exercise without the risk of excessive screen time.
  • Exercises pattern recognition — Identifying letter patterns and common word structures strengthens a cognitive skill that applies across many areas of learning.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between Daily and Unlimited mode?

In Daily mode, there is one new puzzle each day, shared by all players worldwide. This creates a communal experience where you can compare results with friends. In Unlimited mode, you can play as many puzzles as you want without waiting — perfect for practice or extended play sessions.

Can a letter appear more than once in the answer?

Yes! The secret word can contain duplicate letters. For example, words like "APPLE" (two P's) or "CREEK" (two E's) are possible. Keep this in mind when your clues don't seem to fit with all unique letters.

What happens if I can't solve the puzzle?

If you use all six guesses without finding the word, the answer is revealed. Don't worry — every unsolved puzzle is a learning opportunity. Take note of the word and consider how you might have approached it differently.

What's a good Wordle score?

Solving in 3 or 4 guesses is considered very good. Solving in 2 is impressive, and solving in 1 (with no prior clues) is incredibly rare and mostly lucky. Solving in 5 or 6 is still a success — you found the word within the limit!

Are proper nouns accepted as guesses?

No, only common English words are accepted as guesses, and the answer will never be a proper noun. All answers are everyday English words, though some may be less commonly used than others.
